The Adventure School, on the shores of Loch A Chadh-Fi, is the home to all our summer camps. We only run one type of summer camp at a time. Rebecca and Mark will see the young people daily, often at mealtimes and when out in our workboats for fishing and going to survival island.
Our friendly team of instructors are with us for several months before the summer camps start and are professionally qualified in the mountains and on the sea. Read on for details on accommodation, food and safety and life at the adventure school during our summer camps.
A collection of Norwegian-style wooden cabins are clustered just yards from the seashore.
The main building with its distinctive red roof houses the main living and dining room, a number of comfy bunk rooms, boys and girls loos and showers and separate bathroom facilities for instructors.
A handful of outer cabins have further bunk room space, separate living space for our staff team, a drying room for kit and clothing and a large kit store and workshop.
We arrange the bedrooms so that young people are sharing with others of the same age.
We have robust risk assessments and operating procedures in place. These are constantly reviewed, and our staff are suitably trained and qualified to make dynamic decisions in our remote environment. Rebecca, and her parents before her, have been operating an adventure school here for over 50 years without serious incident.
We expect a lot of the young people that come to us on summer camps. During the camps as young people become more familiar with our environment, we give them more responsibility and independence. We teach them how to identify hazards and act accordingly. In this way, they become better at decision-making for themselves and can be given a carefully crafted level of freedom to create their own experiences at different points of their respective summer camps.
A ‘participation and risk’ statement relevant to your individual summer camp/course is included as part of the booking form and young people and their parents must read and understand this.
Our staff hold professional qualifications administered by Mountain Training UK and British Canoeing, and they undergo a two-week familiarisation and training process with Mark and Rebecca in April, before the start of the season in May.
We complete background checks on all of our staff through the Disclosure Scotland PVG scheme.

Young people start the day with a good breakfast of cereal or porridge, bacon and eggs or similar, toast and jam and a mug of hot tea.
It is important that our camp participants want to eat their packed lunches, as they need the essential energy when on the top of a mountain or out kayaking. So, after breakfast, we make our own sandwiches, choosing from cheese and pickle, ham, tuna or egg mayonnaise, honey, marmite, cucumber and salad. Homemade flap jack or pack of biscuits and fresh fruit each day.
Supper is a two-course set meal, either homemade soup and main course with vegetables and salad or a main course and desert.
Some of our favourites include tomato soup, lasagne, mango chicken curry, locally caught fish pie, sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble.
On expeditions we have hearty and delicious expedition meals that are heated on camping stoves.
The kitchen is at the heart of the Adventure School. We cook everything in our own kitchen at the adventure school.
No pre-prepared ready meals or deep fat fryers. We eat as we would like to in our own home.
Rebecca or Mark and some of the instructors will sit down to eat every meal with the summer camp.
We have a nut free kitchen and can cater for most dietary requirements with reasonable notice.
You can open a comprehensive personal kit list for both summer camps here.
One Week Adventure Camp Kit List
Two Week Expedition Camp Kit List
We have a small hire stock of waterproof jackets and trousers, walking boots and sleeping bags which requested for a small additional charge. Expedition rucksacks can also be hired for the two week camp if necessary. Any kit hire requests should be emailed to Rebecca in advance so that we can make sure we have the appropriate size for you.
Do contact Rebecca if you have any questions about personal kit and clothing.
Our summer camps are a phone free environment away from the internet, apps and social media. Once you are here we will collect your phone and any other valuables for safe keeping.
Our instructors will take lots of photos of each team on the summer camps and we will share these with everyone at the end of the camp. If you want to take your own photos you can bring a dedicated camera.
Should you need to contact home during the summer camp you can have your phone back for this purpose on an appropriate evening or, in the case of the two week expedition summer camp, on return to the Adventure School from an expedition.
