Arkle summits for all teams

Four teams became three today in preparation for the mountain. Having camped on the shores of Loch Dughaill on Sunday night we left directly from the Adventure School after an early breakfast. All three teams ascended the open south-east slopes to the first summit at 758m.

From here the mountain drops to a col before the ridge narrows and arks around in a crescent shape to the second summit (787m) with a bit of easy scrambling.

The final approach to Arkle’s second summit

The first team were at the second summit a little over 3 hours after leaving the bothy, certainly the fastest Year 8 team we have had on the mountain. The second team made it shortly, and the third, content with a great effort to reach the first summit headed back down the same way that they had come up.

The first two teams descended the open coire on the south side of the mountain and were treated to a close quarter aerial display as two RAF tornados chased down a Hawk jet right before our eyes.

The fine achievement of all three teams was matched by fine weather, a great day for all.
