Highland Games, beach day and sea kayaking journeys begin

Great levels of participation from the summer camp teams at the Durness Highland Games on Friday. Rhianna broke a long-standing Ridgway Adventure record for Games Day winnings, Struan and Marie took on the hill race with Mark and Rebecca and we had people competing in almost every event available.

On Saturday we had a rest day at the beach. Swimming, body boarding, volleyball and beach games, and a chance to rest and relax a little at the mid-point of the summer camp. Despite a stiff westerly wind and a sharp shower it was a beautiful day on the sand of Oldshoremore.

Weather has led to some adjustment to the sea kayaking expeditions leading to full days and evenings out in the boats, returning to the Adventure School having cooked and eaten supper rations out in a rocky cove or beach out along the coast, and not camping out.

Today’s teams (mixed teams of Reds and Blues) had some outstanding conditions, calm seas, moody skies, a little rain but plenty of sunshine. Large numbers of seals about both in the lower reaches of Loch Laxford but also along the open coastline. We paddled back to the Adventure School late in the evening ready for showers and bed, but it gave us some fantastic and atmospheric sea kayaking.

The Yellows and Greens will be out sea kayaking tomorrow whilst the Reds and Blues go lobster fishing, travel across to Ardmore to see the 1966 Atlantic rowing boat and begin preparations for the final expedition to Cape Wrath.
