Perfect weather for our traverse of the Foinaven ridge

We made an early (7.30am) start from the bothy. The day starts with a long initial ascent, climbing open slopes to just over 800m before the excitement really begins, with sections of easy scrambling over scree and around rocky outcrops as you drop into, and climb out of ‘The Pass of the Bellowings’ and around ‘Lord Reay’s Seat’, a large rocky buttress that straddles the ridge. Beyond that, the walking becomes more straightforward up to the summit and the team dropped down the north-western flanks to return to Rhiconich.

We would often tackle the mountain as a two day expedition, wild camping on the descent during our 14 day expedition summer camp. But with the great weather and a strong team our ‘fast and light’ approach saw the teams off the mountain in 9 hours. A long and challenging day… but that was what we were after.

The team are well and preparing for a full day of sea kayaking deep into Loch Laxford. The settled weather continues, almost no rain for a month now!
