Sunny summit success on Arkle

and a blue sky day of sea kayaking, climbing and lobster creels

The great weather continued for our mountain day on Monday, but with just the slightest of breezes to take the edge of the temperature.  The teams set off from our mountain base camp having had breakfast in the old stone stables at Lone. The four teams picked their own routes up the open south east facing slopes with their instructors. The Red Snappers took a line up the edge of the large escarpment that gives fantastic views all the way and some challenging terrain. Others chose the stream bed where the water tumbles over quartzite slaps forming little pools and waterfalls.

All of the teams had reached the first summit by midday, stopping for a bite to eat before tackling the narrow ridge that leads around to the second summit. The ridge requires a little extra care but by 1.30pm all the teams had made it.

The Blue Whales were first back to the camp and heading home to the Adventure School for a swim before supper.

Chicken curry with rice and veg and apple crumble with ice cream, and a well deserved early night after a tough but hugely rewarding day in the mountains.

Today (Tuesday), after an early morning run or swim, the teams are back out, with rock climbing and abseiling for the Blue teams, sea kayaking for the Red teams and lobster creels, shelter building and a trip across to see the 1966 Atlantic rowing boat for all.
