Teams return from Survival Island success

With the prospect of a fresh sou-westerly breeze, we took the opportunity to send the teams out to Survival Island yesterday afternoon. We spent the day looking at shelter building and independent decision-making on ‘search to survive’, a wilderness orienteering exercise where the young folk operate without direct input from instructors.

With all that in place and after a slab of lemon drizzle cake, the teams boarded our workboats with Mark and Rebecca and motored to the island. The final briefing in the boats and a few showers sharpened minds to the task at hand.

The first teams landed at about 4 pm and from there, it is up to them. Kit drops were found, camps were established and fires set and lit with varying degrees of success and longevity. Not everything goes right at the first attempt and a bit of dampness requires additional perseverance.

There was a stunning show from a low and large crescent moon and the sunrise this morning was beautiful as the teams left the island by boat with Mark and Zeki.

A chill-out day at the beach today. A chance to relax and reflect a little, to swim, wave jump and body board, and to play sports on the sand. Back to the adventure school later and a night back in their beds before the final full day of activities. The forecast is mixed but we’ll hope to rock climb, abseil and see the 1966 Atlantic rowing boat.
