Durness Highland Games

Lots of participation and prizes won

We have been at the Durness Highland Games today. It is a very traditional Highland event held in many small communities during the summer where local people and visitors come to watch pipe bands play, Scottish dancers dance, Heavyweight men compete in events like ‘Tossing the caber’ and take part themselves in track, field and novelty events. It is a great day out with a very local feel.

The boys and girls got thoroughly stuck in with the incentive of small cash prizes for first, second and third in each event. The novelty events, like ‘Tilt the bucket’ and the pillow fight, saw mass participation from our summer camp team and a good handful of them competed hard in the track and field events. Notable amongst them were Jonathan, Will and Elliott who took part in the long and gruelling ‘Hill Race’ with the former securing first place in his age category and third place overall. Riccardo, Vittorio and Max shared joint first place in the high jump and Kaja, Rinske and Tatiana competed in just about every athletic event available winning a number of prizes.

Our teams wouldn’t stand much chance against adults in the tug of war but they gave it a good go anyway.

The Reds sea kayaking expedition starts tomorrow whilst the Blues will be based at the Adventure School for a raft build and race and the lobster creeling.
