Final preparations for Survival Island

The teams battle it out on the sea loch in the raft race

Another sunny day in the far north-west and the crags behind the Adventure School are glowing pink and amber as the sun goes down on another busy day. The ‘Red Faces’ saw off the challenge of the ‘Bluetooths’ this morning in the raft build and race. The Reds dropped off their instructor Geoff, and the Blues their courageous teacher Mrs Neaves, on the pontoon to collect flags and eggs before being returned to the shore by their respective teams. After a good dose of piracy and a long-distance swim by one of the Blues, the Reds touched the shore ahead of their rivals! 

The ‘Red Skies’ levelled the scoresheet this afternoon snatching victory from the ‘Blue Moons’.

When not building rafts and racing out on the loch, the teams have been making final preparations for survival island. We looked at lighting a campfire with a striking flint and steel, foraging for and cooking wild foods from the seashore, filtering and purifying natural water sources, and making a simple bread (damper). The mussels that grow naturally around the shore here seem to have gone down well, cooked simply on an open fire!

The pupils and staff are well and excited about the prospect of a night under the stars tomorrow on survival island.
