Wild camping and Arkle ascent

The girls and boys of St Leonards Year 6 are back at the adventure school tonight having spent the past 24 hours out in the wild. Back under a roof after a night under canvas. We left the adventure school at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon after a day of survival skills.

We had spent the day training the three teams in the fire, food and shelter building skills that they will need to use themselves later in the week. We had a quick mug of Andrew’s homemade tomato soup before leaving for our wild camp and once there, and with tents pitched, the children heated up their main course on camping stoves and tucked into a large piece of sticky toffee cake.

With tents up and bellies full the boys and girls set about building the loos and collecting water from the stream before setting out the roll mats and sleeping bags ready for bed. The night spent at the foot of Arkle gives the possibility of an early start on the mountain and is great practice for managing their personal admin around camp in preparation for survival when they will be without tents and stoves. It is also great fun sharing a tent with your pals.

It wasn’t the driest ascent of Arkle so far this summer but certainly atmospheric and the boys and girls were in great spirits singing their way to the summit.
