Westbourne Year 9s summit Arkle
We have just returned from the mountains after a successful day on Arkle with the Year 9 team from Westbourne School, Sheffield. Conditions were ideal with a good breeze and high-level cloud giving pleasant temperatures, cooler than we had for yesterdays sea kayaking.
The Red team headed up the escarpment edge while the Blues took a route up the principal stream system on the mountain. Both teams made good time and converged on the first summit within minutes of each other, shortly before midday. From there the teams picked their way across the crescent shaped ridge that joins the first and second summits. The final section of the ridge requires a little bit of additional team work as we negotiate a blocky section of rocks guarding the second summit. It has an airy exposed feel to it. All the while there were fantastic views away to the west coast, towards Loch Laxford and the bright green grass of the crofts at Ardmore.
Tomorrow we will be rock climbing, abseiling and orienteering. With a good forecast for Tuesday evening we may well head to survival island a night earlier than originally planned.
